Sociology major makes an impact interning with International Rescue Committee

Working in the Intercultural Center, Yulianna Aceves ’26 has witnessed firsthand the value of community impact and giving back. Now, as an intern with the (IRC), she has a more hands-on community impact role on a larger scale.

As the Resource and Development Intern, Aceves oversees incoming volunteers and interns across three different offices, ensuring they have what they need for onboarding and screening applicants for fall internship positions. She also helps the IRC’s communication efforts by writing emails and client stories for outreach materials.

“I’ve really appreciated being in a professional environment and having the opportunity to connect with people who have real experience in the field I’m passionate about,” says Aceves.

“It’s been eye-opening to see behind-the-scenes impact nonprofits have on communities in need. Plus, working alongside other interns my age from different colleges has made the experience even more enjoyable,” she says.

Aceves, a sociology major with a social work track, dedicated much of her spring semester to working on the Intercultural Center’s “Serve for Good” initiative. Alongside Emily Raider ’25, Aceves co-founded the initiative and advised students on organizing individual service projects. She credits her role with the Intercultural Center for strengthening her organizational and communication skills, which have been useful in her internship.

She also attributes her sociology courses, specifically SOC 104 Social Problems, for preparing her for this internship, recognizing how larger systemic forces affect individuals’ everyday lives.

“This perspective has given me a deeper appreciation for the role nonprofits play in addressing gaps in social services and advocating for marginalized communities, particularly in today’s social and political climate.”

Aceves is one of many KÌåÓý students who has secured an internship through the annual Career and Graduate Fair. After meeting the IRC representative at the 2024 fair, she followed the organization on social media and quickly applied after seeing a post hiring for summer interns. Students can connect with organizations and businesses like the International Rescue Committee and more at this year’s Career and Graduate Fair on Oct. 23.
