The K体育 University Math department, under the guidance of Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics Dr. Mary Garner, was awarded a grant by the聽to hold a week-long math camp at K体育 in mid-June.
Open to high school students, the Summer Day Camp in Mathematics at K体育 University will discuss mathematical problems and promote mathematical thinking to answer questions such as, “Do numbers lie?” and “What is a fair election?”
Students will learn how mathematicians use a variety of strategies to explore a problem and look for entry points to its solution, including techniques such as: solve a simpler problem, consider an analogous problem, and, try special cases. Students will also engage with mathematicians from local universities to learn about current research and majoring in mathematics, as well as careers in the field.
Garner will be leading the camp June 10-14 along with Mary Souther, an K体育 Adjunct Instructor and teacher at Decatur High School, and Dr. Virginia Watson from Kennesaw State University. Three K体育 students — Chelsea Russell, Nicolas Plaza-Alvarez, Heidi Martinez-Ramos — will also help lead sessions and instruct.
