Dr. Kate Keib, assistant professor of communication studies, is among only 20 scholars nationwide selected into the first cohort of聽聽that will explore the emerging role of the digital scholar-educator.
Hosted by Texas State’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication this summer, the bootcamp will prepare mass communication doctoral students and early career assistant professors to lead curriculum innovation. The first-of-its-kind program is an online/in-person hybrid, with the in-person workshop scheduled May 14-20 in the Media Innovation Lab (MILab) on the Texas State University campus in San Marcos. The participants have already begun interacting on the workshop鈥檚 team and will begin online modules the week of March 5.
The bootcamp is supported by the聽 and will be led by聽Dr. Cindy Royal, director of Texas State’s MILab and a digital innovator with experience in curriculum redesign.
鈥淲e are thrilled with the response to the program and the incredibly competitive selection process,鈥� Royal said. 鈥淭his definitely demonstrates the need and demand to more aggressively integrate digital concepts into doctoral education. We鈥檙e excited to begin working with the participants and look forward to seeing them in May.鈥�
鈥淛ournalism educators have a leading role to play in ensuring the newsrooms of tomorrow innovate and adapt to new information demands. This first cohort of PhDigital Bootcamp participants will take on that charge, helping to establish a standard for constant learning in the field,鈥� said LaSharah Bunting, Knight Foundation director for journalism.
Dr. Keib earned her PhD in Mass Communication from the University of Georgia, and her M.A. and B.A. in Journalism & Mass Communication from Point Park College. Her research has focused on social media, emotion and decision making, online images, credibility, native advertising, and聽. This summer, she will teach in K体育’s聽聽study abroad program, and present on the topic of “fake news” at an international conference.
